Volume 15 Issue 48 – 12 June 2007 Editor: Peter Reeves

Is "Service Above Self" your motto?

This Week: As usual, the meeting after a long week-end, this weeks meeting was poorly attended. Those that did attend included Brian and June Bragg, Jes James, Ashley Thomas, Jim Brown, Bill Robb, Roy Hilton, Jim Kyan, Peter Reeves and Helen Syrmalis. All that attended had a pleasant breakfast and General Fellowship.

Just before the end of the meeting, the Marconi fire alarm sounded, and although no-one from the club responded in any appropriate manner, we heard the worst rendition of the National Anthem ever. Obviously our choir-boy leader Bill will need to get out the tuning forks for next week.

Joker Draw: Jim Brown drew the winning number for the draw last week and was good enough to draw Peter Reeves' ticket. Unfortunately Peter was only able to find the five of diamonds and the jackpot of $20.00 will be available next week. Better luck next time.

ARHRF: Correction from last week. The Funding Partner program does not require a three year commitment, but may be a single contribution for research into an area of health that we as a club wish to support. Suggestions have been Breast Cancer, Diabetes and Prostrate Cancer.

RYDA: The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness program is being held on Monday 18th June for Fairfield High School. We have agreed to help with the administration. The following volunteers have agreed to attend this Monday. Jim Kyan, Darren Nation, Marric (Friend of Brian and June), Ian Dolan, Alan Ireland and Brian Bragg.

The RYDA program is an important District 9690 initiative, but it does take an effort by the club members to help with the running of each training day. All members are encouraged to offer assistance for the next day when we are advised it is scheduled.

NYSF: We have received five applications for the National Youth Science Forum to be held in January. A selection panel is needed to review the applicants to determine which ones we will submit to the District Panel. Any one available to join the selection panel should contact Brian Bragg to offer their assistance.

The National Youth Science Forum is run each year in January, with two intakes. Each forum is for two weeks and the forums start in the 1st and 3rd week of January. Applicants need to be currently in year 11 and intend to do science in year 12 with the objective of taking a career in science. Applications closed last week.

EXPO : As reported last week, the Expo was considered an outstanding success and Peter Reeves has been asked to prepare a letter of thanks to the Shelter Box organisers for their assistance of delivering and picking up the demonstration box.

Assistance to Hunter Valley : Jim Brown proposed that we identify a club in the Hunter Valley that may be offering assistance to the flood victims of last weeks storm. Although there was general agreement that some assistance would be given, Bill reminded the members that the District Governors had a very good relationship and it would be better if we await advice from District Governor Harley, before we proceeded with the proposal. The club board will take the proposal under advisement.

THE ACCIDENT

Ole had a car accident. In court, the trucking company's lawyer was questioning Ole . "Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine,'?" asked the lawyer.

Ole responded, "Vell, I'll tell you vat happened. I had just loaded my favourite mule, Bessie, into the..."

"I didn't ask for any details", the lawyer interrupted.

"Just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!'?"

Ole said, "Vell, I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was Driving down the road...."

The lawyer interrupted again and said, "Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question."

By this time, the judge was fairly interested in Ole 's answer and said to the lawyer, "I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favourite mule, Bessie".

Ole thanked the judge and proceeded. "Vell as I vas saying, had just loaded Bessie, my favourite mule, into the trailer and vas driving her down the highway ven this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side.

I vas thrown into one ditch and Bessie vas thrown into the other. I vas Hurting, real bad and didn't vant to move.

However, I could hear Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans.

Shortly after the accident a highway patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, and saw her fatal condition, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes.

Then the patrolman came across the road, gun still in hand, looked at me and said, "How are you feeling?"

"Now vat the HELL vould you say? "
