This Week: Well, we had Roy, Chris, JimK, Bill, JimB, Vicki, Jes, Helen, Keiran and Brian for Prez Jimbo's last morning meeting as head honcho. In two weeks time we will have Keiran chairing the meetings again. The year has been a very successful and to say at least entertaining year for Jim. Jim along with all the presidents before him and those that are yet to come, have and will make a significant and valuable contribution to our club and Rotary as a whole. From all the members and board, thank you Jim for your year as President of the Rotary Club of Wetherill Park. I am sure that in the upcoming newsletters we will hear what Jim thinks of his achievements and I am sure we will hear from Keiran about his vision for the next year.

Welcome back Keiran, we have heard only a couple of the stories of your holiday and look forward to hearing more. In particular, Keiran and Anne spent 4 days in Austria with Maria (an exchange student we had a couple of years ago) and she and her partner Richard are expecting their first baby in October. Congrats.

RI Convention 2008: The 99th RI Convention is in Los Angeles, 15–18 June 2008

Lights, Camera, Action!

See the Stars! Share the spotlight with fellow Rotarians in the entertainment capital of the world.

Los Angeles is the ideal stage for Rotary International's annual extravaganza. Like the family of Rotary, this sprawling metropolis

of 3.8 million people boasts a diverse ethnic mix and cosmopolitan flare. L.A. is the second largest city in the United States and teems with activity and culture — from its star-studded motion picture industry to its picturesque beachfront communities and resorts.

Convention cost is $265USD if paid by 15th December 2007.

The convention will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Centre, a mammoth steel and glass building with 720,000 square feet of exhibition space. Download or view the PDF at http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/pdfs/c08_brochure.pdf

Let's make sure we are in the centre of the action by booking early!

Pay A-tention

The Lone Ranger and Tonto were camping out one night. Tonto, after having a very bad dream, woke up to see the stars up above him. He woke the Lone Ranger and said to him, "What you think?"

The Lone Ranger replies reassuringly, "Well, Tonto, it's like this, God gives us miracles in life. Each day is a new beginning, just like every night there's a new star in the sky. What do you think?"

Tonto looks at him, confused and says, "Tonto think someone stole tent."

Beer factoids

The oldest brewery in Munich, the Augustine brewery, was founded in 1294, when, on the order of the bishop of Freising, an Augustinian monastery was established at the Haberfeld, just outside the gates of the city. Munich was famous for its breweries operated by monks.

A true pilsner comes from the Pilsner, Czech Republic. The original pilsner was Pilsner Urquell (Plzensky Prazrod), meaning "The Original Spring of Pilsen." It still is one of the most popular pilsner in the world.
The first beer brewery in the US opened in Manhattan in 1623.
The first Octoberfest was held in 1810 in Munich, Germany.
Löwenbrau of Munich was founded 1373.
The Czech Republic has the highest per capita beer consumption in the world, at 155 litres (40 gal). (WHAT!!!!)
Sake, the Japanese rice brew, is closer to beer than wine by its production method.
The English word "brewer" refers to a male beer-maker; "brewster" to a female.
